Water the origin of life! Our first activity was in Alviela spring, the largest water reserve in the Iberian Peninsula. There are more than 180 km of tunnels and it is the main freshwater supply of the capital, Lisbon since 1880.

Alviela "Water Eye" Spring, Alcanena-Santarém
The source of the Alviela River is located at the base of an escarpment, on the geological border between the Massif Limestone Estremenho and the Tertiary Basin of Baixo Tejo. In this place, rocks with about 150 million years of difference are in contact (limestones from the Jurassic and sandstones from the Tertiary). The Alviela river is fed throughout the year by a permanent spring, but in periods of greater rainfall the water is also expelled through temporary springs, namely by a temporary overflow outlet located next to the main spring (Olhos de Água) and by a another located next to the Poço Escuro. The flow of the river is thus strongly influenced by the waters that fall into a feeding basin with about 180 km2, located in the area of Plateau de Santo António. These waters, after quickly infiltrating the limestone, are conducted underground through galleries to the source. The Alviela spring is one of the most important in our country, delivering 17,000 liters per second, that is, 1.5 million cubic meters of water per day (peak flood). From 1880 to the present day, this spring was one of the main sources of water supply to the city of Lisbon (through the Aqueduto do Alviela), and is still today an overflow point for one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in the country.
